About UPSC Civil Services

Union Public Service Commission conducts Civil Services examination every year for the recruitment of candidates for various Government services like Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Police Services (IPS) and Indian Forest Services (IFS) and Central Services such as Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS), Indian Foreign Service etc . The selection process of UPSC IAS comprises three stages prelims exam, mains exam and personal interview.

UPSC Civil Services Exam 2021 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must check IAS 2021 eligibility criteria before filling the online application form. The eligibility criteria comprises age limit, educational qualification, nationality and number of attempts.

Nationality

Candidates to be eligible for Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service must be a citizen of India. While for other services, candidates must be either -

  • A citizen of India Or
  • Nepal / Bhutan/a Tibetan refugee (who came to India before January 1, 1962 with the intention of settling down permanently) or
  • Those migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam to settle in India. These candidates must have an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.

Candidates belonging to Nepal, Bhutan or Tibetan refugee are not eligible for appointment to the Indian Foreign Service.

Age limit as on August 1, 2020

Candidates age should be 21 to 32 years
Relaxation in upper age limit will be provided to the following categories.

  • SC/ST – 5 years
  • OBC – 3 years
  • Defence Service Personnel – 3 years
  • Ex-Servicemen – 5 years
  • ECOs/SSCOs – 5 years
  • PwD – 10 years
Academic qualification

Candidates must have graduation in any discipline. Those who have appeared in their final year degree examination and results are awaited are eligible for the examination.

Number of Attempts
  • Candidates appearing for Civil Service Examination will be provided only six attempts.
  • There is no restriction for SC/ST candidates (OBC category candidates are permitted nine attempts)
